ADMISSIONS
Admission to the NEURUS program is competitive. The program typically admits graduate students, although advanced honors undergraduates undergraduates have also participated in previous years.
To apply, interested graduate applicants are advised to complete the following steps using this proposal preparation guide early in the spring semester of their first year at the University of Illinois. Interested undergraduates are required to complete the same steps in the spring semester of their junior year.
1. Identify an urban and regional planning issue or topic of interest.
2. Independently research the areas of departmental specialization at European partner institutions, as well as other literature on your field of interest to identify the most current research on the topic.
3. Complete a brief research proposal, typically 2 pages in length, to submit to the NEURUS coordinator. This research proposal should describe the area of interest, it's significance to urban planning, the most current debates in the topic, and a preliminary research question. Keep in mind that this will be your most preliminary research proposal and it is meant to be the first step in narrowing down your research topic.
Selected students will be notified of their admission to the program in late spring. Selections are based on the availability of funding and the quality of the research proposal. The NEURUS coordinator will advise selected students on which European partner institution will be best fit for their research topic.
FUNDING
Selected NEURUS fellows are eligible to receive:
1. A tuition waiver for the semester of their exchange and;
2. A monthly stipend during the semester of their exchange towards living expenses, and travel to and from the two continental seminars.
